Washington D.C is the capital of the united states of America since July 16, 1790.

Washington D.C location at the mid-Atlantic area of the east coast of the USA, between Virginia and Maryland built upon one of the Potomac river banks.

 

Washington DC is not one of the 50 states. But it's an important part of the U.S. The District of Columbia is our nation's capital. Congress established the federal district from land belonging to the states of Maryland and Virginia in 1790.

Washington D.C Today is 68.34 mi² with a population of 633,427, made up of a piece from Virginia south of the Potomac River and a piece from Maryland north of the Potomac River.


 

Why is it called the District of Columbia?

On September 9, 1791, the three commissioners overseeing the capital's construction named the city in honor of President Gorge Washington. The federal district of Columbia (a feminine form of "Columbus"), which was a poetic name for the United States in use at that time.
